If you're in a hurry, go elsewhere. Even during the week it's going to be a 5- 5 1/2 hour trip. They play fivesomes, extra money for American Golf (They run the course.) but adds extra time to finish the round. Weather in Long Beach usually very pleasant, cooler when other areas are hot. Lots of tree lined, fairly wide, fairways make keeping the ball in play pretty easy. Greens are very quick but always in goof shape. Some almost unfair if you have a downhill putt. Hey, that's part of the challenge right! Fairway grass holds your ball up a bit making shots easier to hit. Rough can be inconsistent heights and tough. Not the quietest course. Surrounded by street noise on almost all sides and a dog park runs along the side of one fairway. All that said, I/we (wife & I) always enjoy playing the course and look forward to the next round.

Been playing here for years. I love all of Billy Bell's courses. He doesn't move a lot of dirt and finds ways of fitting interesting holes into the terrain he finds. My only problem is with American Golf...on all their courses, they play fivesomes and pack tee times together. All the courses they manage play slow, and they don't have marshals. Long Beach has a few really good courses...this is one, El Dorado, Skylinks, Lakewood.... I live in Hollywood, and when the weather is cool, we go east (lots of great courses in the IE) and when it's hot we go to Ventura or Long Beach. I always enjoy coming here, and would play here more if it was a 4 hour round. The 5 hour round usually puts me smack in traffic for the ride home...too bad...

I have played Rec Park for nearly 30 years and am a long-standing member of the men's club. This course can be put into premium condition, as there have been years where the greens were as good as any private course in SC. But in the past 12 years, American Golf has played round robbin with its maintenance staff, and the turf has been subjected to too many unskilled doctors. The patient has seriously been in pain. The current club manager and superintendent are working very hard as a team to bring this course back to where it belongs. American Golf needs to reduce the play this grand ole course is subjected to, implement 8 minute tee time intervals & stick with 'em, quit overbooking like an HMO doctor, fix the snack shack, and give the current staff an adequate budget to work with. This past Saturday we had an 11:00 AM tee time, reported in 30 min. ahead, and didn't tee off until 11:42. There were 5somes everywhere and it took 5.5 hours to play this short course. How does that happen? Overbooking, no marshal, no attention to the first tee. At over $55.00 for cart and greensfee, this was not a good value. Add to this greens that don't hold 14 yd. pitch shots, aged ball marks everywhere on the greens,way too much sand on bunker faces,and the 10th tee grill man packing up at 1:40 and you've got egg on your face for bringing your clients to play there!

Having just celebrated it's 100th anniversary, Rec Park is one of the finest public golf courses in the greater L.A. area. A recent addition is the Superintendent - Jorge - who has brought the course conditions, especially the razor fast greens, back to prominence. The staff, from management to the workers on the course, are well trained and perform well above standard. As a regular player of the course, we now "get" to focus on the minor things that can be improved as opposed to anything major.

The greens were as smooth as a billiard table. I was there for the JC Cunningham SCGA Tournament - great facility - great practice areas. Lots of stuff to do in the area.

Great course, however the greens were punched and sanded this day. When they heal, these greens are fast and true, especially with the amount of play the course gets. New manager just took over and the entire place is getting upgraded.(paint, new mens room, fairways are better but some could use a little TLC.) All in all a solid 4 and is getting better

I love this course it is the right mix of short and long holes it makes a good course for all abilities. The squirls are very agresive throw them a couple nuts its all good.

Food and beverage managment stinks !!!! Great cookout on 7th hole, only open half the days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Marshal's keep pace of play going better than any other American Golf course I have played !!!!!! R

Ryan and his staff do a great jb and the greens in December with the amount of Golf played are incredible. Too bad people do not understand they need to replace their divots in the fairways nd fix the ones on the greens.

Tough to get early morning reservations if you're not a Long Beach resident, but was a good choose when I needed a mid day tee time. Pace a little slow, but in good shape for a public course.
